Abstract The convergence of wireless and Internet Protocol (IP) has led to the need for IP to handle mobility. The Mobile IP protocol was developed to facilitate IP mobility. However, it has a number of shortcomings for dynamically autoconfigured networks. Mobility protocols like Mobile IP with Location Registers (MIP-LR), and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), have been developed to address some of its shortcomings. Micro-mobility protocols like Cellular IP have been developed to address other shortcomings of Mobile IP. In this paper, we present a new integrated mobility management scheme that advantageously combines the strengths of SIP and MIP-LR with the benefits of a micromobility management protocol similar to Cellular IP. A prototype implementation of our scheme is explained, and lessons learnt in the prototyping process are presented.

Towards Autonomic Network Management for Mobile IPv4 Based Wireless Networks

The rapid progress of wireless communication technologies has opened a possibility to offer various types of communications to users irrespective of their locations. The all-IP based wireless networks have been proposed and the Mobile IP protocol is considered as one of prominent candidate frameworks to support a seamless mobility of users. However, to our best knowledge, there are few research...

Mobile flow-aware networks for mobility and QoS support in the IP-based wireless networks

As the volume of mobile traffic consisting of video, voice, and data is rapidly expanding, a challenge remains with the mobile transport network, which must deliver data traffic to mobile devices without degrading the service quality. Since every Internet service holds its own service quality requirements, the flow-aware traffic management in fine granularity has been widely investigated to gua...

Hybrid multilayer mobility management with AAA context transfer capabilities for all-IP networks

This article presents a multilayer mobility management scheme for All-IP networks where local mobility movements (micro-mobility) are handled separately from global movements (macro-mobility). Furthermore, a hybrid scheme is proposed to handle macro-mobility (Mobile IP for non-real-time services and SIP for real-time services). The interworking between micromobility and macro-mobility is implem...

Mobility management in hierarchical multi-hop mobile wireless networks

In this paper, we consider the mobility management in large, hierarchically organized multihop wireless networks. The examples of such networks range from battlefield networks, emergency disaster relief and law enforcement etc. We present a novel network addressing architecture to accommodate mobility using a “Home Agent” concept akin to mobile IP. The performance of the mobility management sch...

Mobility Management in Third-Generation All-IP Networks

It is now widely recognized that using IP as the foundation for next-generation mobile networks makes strong economic and technical sense, since it takes advantage of the ubiquitous installed IP infrastructure, capitalizes on the IETF standardization process, and benefits from both existing and emerging IP-related technologies and services. The large-scale support of data services and their int...
